Upcoming Grant Opportunities for SLED Tech

As agencies start building out their requests for this year’s budgeting cycle, they will turn to grant funding to help them accomplish their technology goals. In 2022, there will be many grant programs that can help state and local government agencies in advancing their technology infrastructure. Listed below are several of these upcoming grant opportunities for 2022:

  • Bureau of Justice Assistance Prescription Drug Monitoring Program
    • This program strengthens states and territory’s ability to plan, implement or enhance PDMPs by accommodating local decision-making based on state laws and preferences, while encouraging the replication of promising practices, including tracking prescribing across providers and states through the integration of PDMPs and Electronic Health Records and Health Information Exchanges.
      • Estimated number of awards: 14
      • Average award amount: up to $2,000,000

  • Bureau of Justice Assistance Body-Worn Cameras (BWCs)
    • The intent of the program is to fund the purchase or lease of BWCs and deployment of BWC pilot, full-implementation, or expansion programs as one tool in a law enforcement agency’s comprehensive problem-solving approach to improve officer safety, enhance evidentiary values, improve accountability and transparency, and promote mutual trust.
      • Estimated number of awards: 57
      • Estimated award amount: Depends on an agency’s size and number of BWCs proposed, from $10,000 up to $2,000,000

  • Bureau of Justice Assistance Smart Policing Initiative (SPI)
    • This program provides resources to law enforcement agencies to help them identify their most pressing crime problems, and support their use of promising practices, data, and technology to effectively respond to those problems. BJA will prioritize applications for the development of real-time crime centers in communities with high violent and gun crime rates.
      • Estimated number of awards: Up to 10
      • Average award amount: Up to $500,000

  • Department of Transportation Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART)

The technology could touch a number of topics, ranging from transportation to energy efficiency to connectivity, and grants would be distributed to a range of partners based on geography, size and effectiveness; the bill does prohibit funds to be used on traffic enforcement or license plate readers.
