The Role of Information Technology in Law Enforcement

The tragic events involving law enforcement over the last month has the spotlight focused on law enforcement agencies and how their job gets done.  At CJIS GROUP we see information technology as a key to driving effective and responsive policing in the US.

One technology you will see on the rise as law enforcement changes is the use of drones. CJIS GROUP has seen a drastic uptick in the number of drones law enforcement have and plan to procure since the start of 2019. Notably, we have seen almost an 100% increase in drone projects being planned since the start of 2019 compared to the previous 18 months (January 2018-June 2019). These drones can be used in a variety of ways including chasing suspects, mapping, live video collection, crime scene surveillance, and event management. The ability to collect information prior to person-to-person contact could prove to be extremely beneficial to both citizens and police officers in identifying issues before they boil over.

Another technology adopted aggressively by law enforcement is body-worn cameras. Body-worn cameras, however, are now morphing into sophisticated multi-modal data gathering tools.  They not only film video, they can also track officer location. This allows for increased transparency within departments, and encourages community policing. Other perks include immediate streaming to the cloud, which enables supervisors to immediately review footage. If an altercation needs to be viewed in real time this is possible through live streaming. Should an officer find themselves in a situation where there isn’t time to hit the record button, there are several auto triggers for the camera which include speeding, injury, or a weapon being drawn.

These are a couple of the tools available.  Beyond these, the whole world of data/analytics can provide law enforcement agencies with information that enables safer more effective proactive policing that is responsive to the needs of the communities they serve.

I think we all can agree that would be a good thing.
