Getting Smart About Smart Cities

In the next two weeks the CJIS GROUP team will be attending Smart Cities Week (Sep. 30-Oct.2) and Smart Cities Connect (Oct. 8-10) at the National Harbor in Maryland. As we gather information on future IT procurement plans related to State and Local government, there is one trend we cannot ignore, the rise of “Smart Cities” across the United States. Over the last 3 years CJIS GROUP has tracked over 150+ Smart City related projects, most of which spawned since the beginning of 2018.

So, what exactly is a Smart City? Well, according to TechTarget, “A smart city is a municipality that uses information and communication technologies (ICT) to increase operational efficiency, share information with the public and improve both the quality of government services and citizen welfare.”

A project CJIS GROUP is currently tracking in the early planning stages shows the blueprints of how Smart Cities gather, analyze and use different types of information. After speaking with this city’s smart city coordinator, we learned that they plan on implementing a parking management system, facial recognition software, interactive kiosks, gunshot detection sensors, a data analytics platform, and an autonomous bus sensor pilot. All of these projects involve gathering data and using it to better the lives of their constituents.

As Smart City projects progress, CJIS GROUP will continue tracking and updating them in addition to identifying new initiatives.
