Expansion of Broadband in Rural Areas

In early 2018 CJIS GROUP hosted a webinar on building better broadband for cities and counties. During this webinar there was a strong emphasis on how rural areas have unique challenges in financing broadband build-out via traditional methods. However, recently, the federal government has put an emphasis on bolstering broadband connectivity in rural areas.

On December 12, 2019 the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the second round of funding for their ReConnect Program. The USDA has allocated roughly $600 million towards broadband infrastructure in rural communities. According to the USDA, “This program will generate private sector investment to deploy broadband infrastructure to provide high-speed internet e-Connectivity to as many rural premises as possible, including homes, community facilities for healthcare and public safety, schools, libraries, farms, ranches, factories, and other production sites.” CJIS GROUP applauds this effort by the federal government. To learn more about how rural areas applied unique financing arrangements to obtain broadband service, take a look at our webinar titled “Building Better Broadband for Cities and Counties”.

Once the ReConnect Program is allocated CJIS GROUP expects a jump in rural broadband projects planned by local governments across the United States. If interested in learning more about the rural broadband projects tracked by CJIS GROUP click here .
