Can Predictive Analytics Improve the College Experience?

Campus Technology

Smart campuses are getting smarter, taking technology initiatives beyond the classroom to the collegiate experience, using data to improve retention rates. The Chronicle of Higher Education released a report on student success highlighting the increase of predictive analytics on college campuses. Campuses are using Information ranging from demographics, grades or student ID swipes to determine patterns and provide individualized support. Over time, new data points may emerge based on consistent patterns within the data, and campus responses are determined based on certain data sets.

In 2014 the University Innovation Alliance, a coalition of 11 public universities, began working together to leverage predictive analytics. Overall, these campuses have seen a 16% increase in bachelor graduates per year. In a review of their efforts, the Alliance pointed to system and process mapping as a critical first step as well as the importance of speaking with a wide range of platform providers to identify a solution that is a perfect fit. Their case studies offer a great primer on the varied ways large and small campuses can integrate predictive analytics systems.

Because graduation rates are tied to federal funding for schools, investment in predictive analytics solutions is on the rise among colleges and universities of all student sizes and operating budgets. We are seeing an increase in bids released for student success intelligence platforms and an emerging need among higher education staff for hybrid solutions that combine predictive analytics platforms with other solutions such as chat bots and mass communication systems.
