Body-Worn Camera Funding

In an exciting shift for greater technology enhancements in Public Safety, the Justice Department recently released a $7.65 million microgrant program in order to fund Body-Worn Cameras for small, rural, and Tribal law enforcement agencies. This particular program applies for any law enforcement department with 50 or fewer full-time sworn personnel, rural agencies (those agencies within non-urban or non-metro counties), and federally-recognized Tribal agencies. The Department established these funds for agencies to purchase or lease body-worn cameras, and would potentially cover expenses related to their implementation. Furthermore, the funds would be utilized for establishing pilot programs, new implementations, or allow agencies to build off of their existing programs. As such, we anticipate an increase in the number of body-worn cameras solicitations within the next several months as awards are made and funds are dispersed. Agencies that are interested in the program can visit the Small Rural Tribal Body Worn Camera Program web site for further information and are free to submit their applications until August 31st, 2021.
