Lower-cost IPMobileNet IP-based data radio is designed for electronic signage
IPMobileNet's IP Series of fixed digital transceivers is designed primarily for police and transportation departments that deploy electronic road signs. The radio allows such departments to execute real-time updates of the signs' displays as weather and road conditions change, or when an AMBER alert has been issued. In addition, municipal bus transportation agencies and airports can use the radio to update transit and flight schedules in real-time, said Brian Purcell the company's vice president of sales and marketing.
"Bus companies are trying to compete with other forms of transportation, such as rail, and they want to look a little more technologically savvy by providing schedule updates," Purcell said. Another potential application, according to Purcell, involves using the radio to backhaul images taken by roadside cameras in order to gauge traffic conditions. The radios provide data throughput up to 32 kbps, which is plenty for low-data-rate applications such as these, Purcell said. (Source: http://urgentcomm.com/ 08-11-2010)

Radio IP debuts mission-critical mobile VPN
Aug 5, 2010 - HOUSTON - Radio IP Software unveiled this week at the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials conference Mult-IP, a network-agnostic mobile VPN built from the ground up for use in mission-critical environments such as public safety. Mult-IP is unique in that it is the only mobile VPN that supports all networks - private mobile radio (IP and non-IP), cellular, Wi-Fi, LTE, WiMAX and satellite - and enables seamless roaming between each network, said Patrick Tabourin, Radio IP's vice president of marketing and product management. The latter capability is made possible by the company's Concurrent Networks technology that was developed last year. The technology does so in two ways. First, IT managers can prioritize the networks that are being used by an agency. Should the preferred network become unavailable, voice and data traffic automatically will transmit over the next-preferred network, and so on. This occurs because the technology establishes a separate tunnel for each network that is always on.(Source: http://urgentcomm.com/ 08-05-2010)

Alaska Selects Niche to Manage Critical Law Enforcement Information
ANCHORAGE, AK, Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ – Alaska, the largest state in the US, has selected Niche Record Management System (RMS) to manage its state law enforcement information. The agency is Alaska’s Department of Public Safety (DPS), provider of police and other public safety services throughout the state through the Division of Alaska State Troopers (AST), the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers (AWT) and the Division of Fire & Life Safety (FLS). Alaska is by far the largest US state – a landmass 2.5 times the size of Texas and 1/5 the size of the “lower 48 states” combined. Its challenging frontier geography and limited road infrastructure means much of the state is accessible only by aircraft, ATV, or boat in the summer, dogsled and snow machine in the winter. While Alaska is big, its population is small and spread out; about 40% of the state’s population of 698,473 lives in the city of Anchorage, with the remainder spread across vast distances within the state. One of nine bidders for the Alaska contract, Niche won out as the only system capable of meeting requirements critical to Alaska’s unique challenges including poor connectivity in many areas of the state. In many areas, bandwidth is highly limited and unreliable. Officers must be able to conduct incident reporting work on standalone, disconnected computers on a patrol vessel in the middle of the Bering Sea, or when investigating a crime in a remote area such as a rural cabin or illegal wildlife kill site. In order to win the contract, Niche successfully demonstrated that its RMS works under all these conditions. (Source: http://www.indianweb2.com/ 08-02-2010)

Motorola Announces Alliance With Intrado to Deliver Next-Generation 9-1-1 Text Messaging Products and Services
NG9-1-1 Leaders to Combine Expertise and Innovative New Technologies to Further Advance Public Safety Services
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., July 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, today announced an alliance with Intrado, Inc., the leading provider of 9-1-1 technology solutions, to deliver next-generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) text messaging enabled products and services.
As agencies move toward wider adoption of NG9-1-1 capabilities, a new approach is needed to fully realize the unprecedented access to non-verbal communication, such as citizen text messaging. Working closely with mutual public safety customers, Motorola and Intrado are combining their expertise with innovative new technologies to further advance public safety services and emergency response. The two companies will initially focus on a citizen text messaging trial to enable access for individuals who may have speech or hearing disabilities. The result of this trial will help inform how citizen text messages are best integrated as public safety agencies move toward NG9-1-1 services. In June 2009 Intrado launched the first text messaging solution to successfully deliver text messages directly to 9-1-1 and has continued to enhance that solution in preparation for broader deployment across the public safety community.
For the initial text trial, the interoperability and integration of Motorola's IP based PremierOneTM CAD and Intrado's A9-1-1TM equipment and technology will be achieved using the ATIS (Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions) Emergency Services Messaging Interface (ESMI) standard. Motorola and Intrado support the need for NG9-1-1 standards. As future NG9-1-1 standards evolve and are approved by industry recognized standards organizations, trial solutions supporting these standards will be considered. L.R. Kimball to Urge Strong Focus on 'Soft Side' of Interoperable Public Safety Networks at Upcoming APCO International Annual Conference
Expert Communications Technology Firm to Offer Crucial Recommendations on Coordination among Public Safety Officials and First Responders to Ensure Interoperable Network Reliability
EBENSBURG, Pa., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- When public safety officials and other first responders consider interoperability among departments and jurisdictions, hardware such as radios, antenna towers, vehicles, computers and call centers often receive the most attention. However, none of it is likely to work effectively without taking into account the procedural "soft side" of interoperability to ensure coordination among responders and dispatchers. Operational processes such as governance, standard operating procedures, training, exercises and usage experience are crucial in assuring effective emergency communications among departments and municipalities.
Such is the philosophy of L.R. Kimball, an architecture, engineering and communications technology firm based in Pennsylvania. Its experts will urge the public safety community to focus strongly on the "soft side of interoperability" from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, August 2 at the upcoming APCO International Annual Conference. The conference will be held Sunday, August 1, through Wednesday, August 4, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

Motorola, Nokia Siemens Deal Makes Sense for Both Parties
The announcement by Nokia Siemens Networks that it will buy Motorola's wireless network infrastructure business for $1.2 billion will free the wireless product maker from its struggle to compete with larger competitors, while also giving it the cash it needs to carry out its plans to split the company into two independent and publicly traded companies. The deal, announced on July 19 in a joint press release, is expected by both companies to close by the end of 2010. The deal has been in the works for some time, and is expected to result in no layoffs as Nokia Siemens will pick up 7,500 existing Motorola employees. The Motorola Solutions division is growing rapidly in response to increased needs for public service wireless communications. Motorola has been the dominant provider of radios for law enforcement in the United States for decades, and the expansion of law enforcement and public service communications into high-speed data promises even more growth. While Motorola needs to wait for the deployment of LTE to field some of its promised communications solutions, significant funding has entered this area of its business in response to stimulus funding by the Obama administration, as well as by Homeland Security funding for interoperable radios. The primary growth in interoperable radios for law enforcement and national security is currently waiting for a final determination in auctions for the public safety bands that were recovered when commercial television was moved to an all-digital format last year. Much of the interoperable communications equipment will be similar to the digital equipment that Motorola is already making for its law enforcement and public service customers. New Mexico E911 Program Contracts L.R. Kimball to Conduct the Statewide NG-SEC Cyber Security Assessment as Part of the Planning for Next Gen 911
EBENSBURG, Pa., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The state of New Mexico E911 Program has selected L.R. Kimball, a leading architecture, engineering and communications technology firm, to conduct a statewide Next Generation 911 cyber security assessment and improvement plan as part of the state's Next Generation 911 (NG911) planning process. New Mexico is contracting L.R. Kimball to help make certain that their system remains secure when the state makes the transition to NG911 in the coming years. L.R. Kimball will work closely with the New Mexico E911 Program to assess and identify areas to improve security in accordance with the National Emergency Number Association's (NENA) NG911 Security (NG-SEC) standard. Findings will be compiled into a report and will be used as the foundation for creating a cyber security plan and NG-SEC compliance "roadmap."(Source: http://www.prnewswire.com/ 06-07-2010)

EFJohnson unveils fireground radio
April 26, 2010 - EF Johnson Technologies unveiled its new 51FIRE ES portable radio — specifically built for the fire service — at the Fire Department Instructors Conference in Indianapolis. The radio operates in temperatures ranging from -30°C to +60°C, meets the IP67 standard for immersion and is intrinsically safe. It offers a battery life for UHF/VHF of about 10 hours and for 700/800 MHz of around 12 hours. In addition, the size of the push-to-talk button was increased so it be activated with gloved hands. It also has a yellow housing so the radio can be found in a fire environment. The radio is available now with a starting price $1,625.(Source: http://urgentcomm.com/ 04-26-2010)

McDuffie County Reports Kenwood NEXEDGE® System is Affordable Path to Narrowbanding and Digital
January 28, 2010 - (Suwanee, GA) Kenwood USA Corp., Communications Sector, reports that after several months of operation, the NEXEDGE® system purchased by the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office "...has exceeded our expectations for coverage and performance" according to William T. (Tracy) Neal, Communications Director, McDuffie County. The system, financed primarily by grants, was, in Neal's words, "...a pretty big leap for us, in getting away from a conventional analog repeater system." McDuffie County has responsibility for two counties' 911 system, Glascock and McDuffie, and decided on NEXEDGE as the most economical path to narrowbanding.
"These radios will do so much that we probably won't even use a third of the features, at least not initially," stated Neal. "We moved from 100 W mobiles to 50 W mobiles and have expanded our coverage area." Neal also stated that the digital technology has an added benefit of increased officer safety for the sheriff and police staff using the Kenwood NEXEDGE portables and mobiles, because, according to Neal, "it is completely secure" and scanners can no longer pick up the public safety frequencies. Neal credits Wilson Communications, the Grovetown, GA Kenwood dealer that sold the system to McDuffie County, with the NEXEDGE installation and service expertise that facilitated the system's deployment.
